Top 10 Nontraditional Holiday TV Episodes

Happy Festivus, everyone!

To celebrate today (in addition to the feats of strength and airing of grievances), I rounded up the top 10 nontraditional Holiday television episodes over at The Daily Beast, from Community and Seinfeld to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who. (And, yes, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's direct-to-DVD special--which just aired on FX for the first time this month--made the list, naturally.)

An aside, I could have filled the entire list with just British television shows, from The Vicar of Dibley and Doctor Who (which both made the list) to Gavin & Stacey, Blackadder, Catherine Tate, Absolutely Fabulous, and about a zillion others.

But I am curious to know: what is your favorite nontraditional holiday episode/special? Putting aside the traditional Rudolph and Charlie Brown Christmas, what are some of the more out there holiday episodes or specials that add that extra spike to the eggnog?

Or make that Festivus aluminum pole shine a little more, anyway?

Channel Surfing: IFC Stakes Claim to "Anita Blake," Bryan Fuller Talks "Heroes" Return, "Life on Mars" Series Finale, and More

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. I promise no April Fool's Day jokes here, just real TV-related headlines this morning.

IFC and Lionsgate Television are developing telepic Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter, based on Hamilton's best-selling Anita Blake novels about the female vampire hunter who also works as a police consultant on supernatural crimes. The movie, which will be produced by Lionsgate and After Dark Films, was written/executive produced by Glen Morgan (The X-Files) and will be shot this summer. (Variety)

SCI FI Wire has an exclusive interview with Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller about his return to NBC's Heroes, what went wrong with the series, and how he intends to fix it. "After I finished watching [the "Villains" episodes the producers sent over], I wasn't sure I could do this," said Fuller. "I didn't recognize the show anymore. It had become something else entirely. My favorite characters had become my least favorite, and there was a second I thought I had to get out of this. Then I started reading the 'Fugitives' scripts, and I thought it was picking up again. There were some stumbles along the way, where it started to get muddy, but I was more inspired." (SCI FI Wire)

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello talks to Life on Mars executive producers Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg about the series finale of the US adaptation of the British series, which wraps its run tonight on ABC. "There is a very clear and definitive answer as to what his journey has been about and how all the pieces over the past 17 hours play into that journey," said Appelbaum about the resolution to Sam Tyler's story. "At the same time, we hope, like all great finales, it still leaves things open to interpretation. But if there's one thing we feel pretty good about it's that in the afterlife of Life on Mars on DVD or wherever, it will exist as a cohesive, complete thought that will all make sense." (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files)

Pilot casting alert: Kevin Rahm (Desperate Housewives) and Jeff Davis will star in ABC comedy pilot presentation This Little Piggy; Dash Mihok (Punisher: War Zone) has joined the cast of CBS comedy pilot The Fish Tank; Rob Huebel (Human Giant) and Julio Oscar Mechoso (Cane) will star in FOX comedy pilot The Station, directed by Ben Stiller; and Alison Brie (Mad Men) has joined the cast of NBC comedy pilot Community. (Hollywood Reporter)

FOX has found their replacement for the axed MADtv. The network is launching an untitled latenight series starring Wanda Sykes in the 11 pm timeslot on Saturday evenings. Series, which will largely resemble the format of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, will launch either this fall or January 2010. Meanwhile, Spike Feresten's latenight FOX talkshow is said to be on the bubble. (Broadcasting & Cable)

AMC is developing reality docuseries True West, that will "follow a group of modern cowboys as they pursue a trade that's quickly vanishing." Project, executive produced by Brett Morgen, is still in its early stages. "We had been putting the word out very quietly but sort of consciously that we were looking at unscripted series, with the mandate being that we were looking for an unscripted series that plays like a drama series," said SVP of original programming Joel Stillerman. "We're not looking to do a competition show or one that's heavily formatted." (Variety)

BBC Worldwide has offered episodes of cult British comedy The Mighty Boosh on iTunes. Episodes from the series' third season will be available at the iTunes store for $1.99 each after they air on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim every Sunday night. The first episode is currently being offered at the reduced price of $.99, so act now! (via press release)

Discovery has renewed five unscripted series including American Loggers, Destroyed in Seconds, How Stuff Works, Time Warp, and Treasure Quest, each of which has been picked up for a seconf season. (Variety)

FOX's The Simpsons are being memorialized on a 44-cent first-class stamp designed by series creator Matt Groening, which celebrates the animated series' twentieth anniversary. The stamp, which features the Simpson clan, will be unveiled on April 9th. (Hollywood Reporter)

Fine Living has ordered a second season of 26 episodes of Whatever, Martha!, the unscripted series that showcases Alexis Stewart and friend Jennifer Koppelman Hutt commenting on old episodes of Martha Stewart Living. (Variety)

SAG and AFTRA have jointly reached a tentative new three-year commercials contract, which is subject to the approval of the SAG/AFTRA Joint National Board and sees an increase of more then $36 million in wage hikes and other payments. AFTRA national president Roberta Reardon called the new contract "a major victory for our unions -- and a victory for organized labor as a whole." (Hollywood Reporter)

USA Today's Gary Levin looks at the belt-tightening going on at the networks and how rough economic times are forcing the networks to get smarter with their money during development season. Still, there are a few big-budget pilots on the horizon (like ABC's $7 million Flash Forward) even as the nets look to trim costs by shooting in less expensive locales (hello, Atlanta!), using digital video rather than 35 mm film, and going back to multi-camera on more comedies rather than go for the more expensive single-camera style. (USA Today)

Heroes creator/executive producer Tim Kring has signed a deal to create interactive entertainment applications for Nokia's Ovi Store, launching this summer. (Variety)

BBC One has confirmed that heisty dramedy The Invisibles will not be returning for a second season. The series, which starred Anthony Stewart Head and Warren Clark, did not find an audience when it aired last summer. "In spite of a great cast and production team, The Invisibles didn't find its audience," said a BBC spokesperson. "We remain very proud of it but it won't be returning." (The Daily Mirror)

AMC to Get "Mad"

Cabler AMC has greenlit its first original one-hour drama, Mad Men, about the professional and personal lives of Madison Avenue advertising execs in the early 1960s, ordering 13 episodes from executive producer/writer Matthew Weiner (The Sopranos) and studio Lionsgate (Weeds).

According to an article in Variety, production begins in April in New York City. Series will star Jon Hamm (We Were Soldiers), January Jones (American Wedding), Elisabeth Moss (The West Wing), Vincent Kartheiser (Angel), Christina Hendricks (Kevin Hill), and John Slattery (K Street).

"Mad Men centers on thirty-something Don Draper, creative director for the Sterling Cooper ad agency, which hawks everything from cigarettes to political candidates. Pilot episode centers on Don's fight to keep a major tobacco account from leaving the agency while juggling his increasingly complicated romantic life."

Weiner wrote the script when he was on staff on the CBS sitcom Becker and the script made its way to David Chase, who hired Weiner on The Sopranos on the strength of the spec. (See, kids, there is hope out there for your spec scripts.) His other credits include Andy Richter Controls the Universe and The Naked Truth.

Mad Men is expected to premiere on AMC in June 2007.

Fox Scores "Dirt" on FX

Pro basketball player Rick Fox has landed a multi-episode arc on FX's upcoming tabloid drama series Dirt, where he'll play... a star basketball player.

However, Fox won't be playing himself on the series, which stars Courtney Cox as the editor of a tabloid mag. Instead, he'll be playing a pro ball player experiencing marital problems. Fox recently appeared on UPN's Love, Inc. and in several installments of HBO's Oz; on the feature side he appeared in Spike Lee's He Got Game and Mini's First Time.

FX ordered 13 episodes of Dirt, which is slated to go into production next month; cabler is looking at an early 2007 premiere.

"Simpsons" Not Welcome in China

Homer just can't get a break.

China has banned animated series The Simpsons from its airwaves in an effort to promote Chinese animation.

According to a report filed by the Associated Press, Chinese regulators have barred foreign cartoons from television during the 5-8 pm period, in order to bolster struggling animation houses in the Republic. Those timeslots are currently occupied by non-Chinese animated series including The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, and Japanese sensation Pokemon.

Much of this change stems from "a recent study that found that 80 percent of Chinese children surveyed liked foreign cartoons and disliked domestic animation."

I don't know about you, but I smell an upcoming Simpsons episode dealing with all of this...

What's On Tonight

8 pm: Two and a Half Men/How I Met Your Mother (CBS); Psych (NBC); 7th Heaven (WB); Wife Swap (ABC); Hell's Kitchen (FOX; 8-10 pm); One on One/All of Us (UPN)

9 pm: Two and a Half Men/The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS); Treasure Hunters (NBC); 7th Heaven (WB); Wife Swap (ABC); Girlfriends/Half and Half (UPN)

10 pm: CSI: Miami (CBS); Medium (NBC); Supernanny (ABC)

What I'll Be Watching

8 pm: Hell's Kitchen.

It's the season finale of the FOX culinary competition show and it's actually down to Heather and Virginia, one of whom will actually win their very own restaurant at the Red Rocks Resort in Las Vegas. Which one will command their teams of axed would-be chefs to victory? It's no secret that I've been rooting for Heather since the very beginning. So, come on, girl and bring home the win.

10 pm: Life on Mars on BBC America.

It's the fourth episode of this brilliant (and British) mind-bending mystery series that stars State of Play's John Simm as Detective Sam Tyler, a modern-day copper who wakes up in 1973. On tonight's episode, Sam takes on a local gangster when he attempts to crackdown on police corruption. Well, better a gangster than that creepy little girl who lives in the telly. She gives me the willies.

10 pm: Weeds on Showtime.

The second season of Showtime's suburban pot dramedy starts tonight. On tonight's premiere episode ("Corn Snake"), Nancy discovers her new beau is a DEA agent (uh oh), Celia runs for city council against Doug, and Andy has to impress a rabbinical school admissions officer.

11 pm: Lovespring International on Lifetime.

The improvised comedy returns with a brand new episode tonight. On tonight's installment ("The Portrait and the Painter"), receptionist Tiffany (Jennifer Elise Cox) creates absolutely chaos at the Lovespring offices when she falls under the suspicion that her ex-boyfriend is having an affair with Victoria (Jane Lynch). And after seeing The 40-Year-Old Virgin, could you blame him?

Animated "Simpsons" Family to Move to Big Screen

It seems the Simpsons rumors were true after all and not an April Fool's Day prank, as many has thought... though the fact that Nelson Munz could be heard laughing didn't make it easy to believe.

Variety is (again) reporting that periennial animated series The Simpsons is heading to the big-screen, after a trailer for the film--due in 2007--began airing in theatres on Friday and popped up last night during a new (albeit pretty lame) episode of the series on FOX.

The feature film, set to open worldwide on 27 July 2007, will feature regular castmembers Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardly Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Pamela Hayden, and Tress MacNeille. Also supplying voices for the film are Albert Brooks, Minnie Driver, and Erin Brockovitch, which could give some hints to the feature film's plotline.

The official announcement comes after a leak in 2001, when it became known that the actors' contract renegotiations contained a clause for a feature option. No word on whether bully Nelson had anything to do with that.

"The Simpsons" To Remain Moderately Funny for Two More Seasons

Variety is reporting today that FOX has given an early two-season pick up to long-running animated series The Simpsons, keeping the show--about a certain yellow-toned family who never seem to age and their doughnut-obsessed dad--on the air at least through 2008.

The order takes The Simpsons into its 18th and 19th seasons, easily making it the longest-running sitcom in Fox's checkered history (it only seemed as though Herman's Head was on for that long). The order also means that The Simpsons will reach its landmark 400th episode, which will air in the show's 18th season. According to Variety, that milestone is tentatively scheduled to air on 20 May, 2007.

I've had my ups and downs with the series and still manage to watch it (when they actually air a new episode) each Sunday, though the quality has been rather sub-par in recent years. Gone now are the classic episodes that you could watch over and over again (and which are shown about 18 times a day in syndication); in their place are mediocre storylines that are far too confusing... or interesting concepts that fall apart in the execution (like the recent meta-theatrical storytelling episode that devolved into an underground shoot-out over lost gold when the timeline fell apart under its own weight). It just seems lately that the show is treading water, desperate for someone to reinvigorate the show and make it relevant once again.

Will that happen soon? Who can say. But at least I've got my classic episodes on DVD to keep me company.
