Writing Life: When the Hurley-Burley's Done
It's not always about winning.
Despite our innately competitive natures as humans, winning isn't always the sole outcome of any endeavor, creative or otherwise.
My most recent pilot script, CONNECTION, while named a semi-finalist by the Finish Line Script Competition, didn't advance to the winners' circle — and that's really OK. I'm amazed to have made it this far, to have CONNECTION named one of only 17 semi-finalists out of hundreds and hundreds of scripts.
Think on that: hundreds and hundreds of pilot scripts. I'm still in awe.
My script was named one of the semi-finalists out of a competition that had over 1000 applicants. I'm often not one for patting myself on the back or even really acknowledging my accomplishments in life, but I can't help but beam with pride at this one. I'm letting see this for what it is: a victory. And to enjoy and celebrate that victory as much as possible.
The battle's been lost and won. And I feel tremendously lucky to have even been on the battlefield, to prove my mettle, and to hone this script into its most optimal form through this process.
I can't say enough positive things about the Finish Line Script Competition, about how truly helpful their comments and suggestions were, their analysis, their response time, and their investment in the work. I feel really quite honored to be included in the mix at all.
Yesterday, Finish Line posted the loglines for the three winners and the semi-finalists, CONNECTION among them. You can find those loglines here. As for CONNECTION, I feel really pleased to now be able to post the logline on my own site as well:
CONNECTION (TV pilot) by Jace Lacob - When the members of a secret support group for psychics are targeted by a murderer, they must band together to unmask the killer.
And I'm going to let myself claim this as a win in my book — and pop open some champagne to celebrate... while revising this feature script, of course.
