What I'm Watching: "The A Word"
Loved BBC One's The A Word so much. Six episodes were not enough of this remarkable, heartfelt, beautiful family drama. Need more ASAP, please.
While the entire cast of the Lake District-set drama is aces, Morven Christie is fantastically fierce as the mother of a child diagnosed with ASD — though the show itself isn't just about Joe's diagnosis, but instead follows each of the family members as they grapple with their own hard truths and uncomfortable situations. Joe is the thing that ultimately brings them together, rather than pushes them apart.
And I'm beyond thrilled that The A Word will return for a second season! Television needs more shows like this one: it's deft, nuanced, and impassioned.
(Season 1 comes to the U.S. on July 13 on SundanceTV. I highly recommend.)
