It's Here: "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life"
I've loved Gilmore Girls since I first received a VHS press screener of the pilot what feels like a lifetime ago. The nervousness I felt sitting down to watch Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (Would it feel the same? Would it be the same? Would it feel worthy?) evaporated in the opening minute of "Winter." I was transported back in time not only to Stars Hollow but to my own past, to a younger self watching Lorelei and Rory with younger eyes. To say that I loved this first installment is an understatement: it both lifted and broke my heart in equal measure. It captured the essence of the show: its wit, its banter, its emotional tug-of-war, its weirdness, and its charm.
Was it perfect? No. But it was perfectly imperfect — a distillation of what I loved best about Gilmore Girls (minus the incredible Edward Herrmann). And for 90 minutes, it felt like you could go home again, after all. Or at least to Luke's for hamburgers and coffee, WiFi and signs prohibiting man buns. And, for 90 minutes, it felt like we'd never left.
